3Novices:Jorge Penadés designs new Camper store in Málaga

Spanish designer Jorge Penadés has designed a colourful new shop for footwear brand Camper using just perforated metal profiles.

It marks the first time in the brand’s history that somebody has been allowed to design and fabricate an entire shop themselves.

The store is located in Málaga, but the idea for it came from a meeting between Penadés and the Camper team in its warehouse in the small Mallorcan village of Binissalem.

The warehouse is primarily used as a storage space for old Camper stores that have been refurbished, and contains pieces custom-made for the brand by designers including Michele De Lucchi, Gaetano Pesce, Ingo Maurer, the Bouroullec brothers and Konstantin Grcic.

Penadés was immediately drawn to the space. “It was this sort of irrational attraction that we sometimes have and we can not avoid! When I entered and the Camper team started to open crates showing me all those museum-quality pieces from many maestros, I was mind blown – I could not get out of my mind this image of me working for few weeks in this space, fabricating myself the entire shop directly 1:1!” he told Dezeen.

He decided to use the space as a temporary factory and moved to Mallorca with his team in the summer of 2019 to construct the store. Penadés used just three basic elements – perforated metal profiles, corner plates and bolts/nuts – in the design of the shop.

“At the beginning the brief was to make a shop with what I could find there and not adding anything new. But on the one hand I didn't want to put some of those great works together and creating a sort of “one-off” store, and on the other, I was more interested in generating a system that could be potentially replicated on other Camper stores in the future,” he explains.

The three elements were used for everything, from seating units to the checkout counter and lighting. Penadés used different-coloured metal profiles in various bright hues for each area.

“I decided to create a code regarding the function of every area of the shop: wall displays are green, table displays are blue for men and women and pink for kids, seating is yellow and paying is red,“ the designer told Dezeen. As a bonus, he also created a new typography and brand logo using the perforated metal profiles.

The project is a part of Camper Together, a model of collaboration in which Camper teams up with designers to create unique stores and products.
