Designer Richard Hutten will speak about design and the circular economy at Dezeen Day in London on 30 October.
The Dutch designer, who is an advocate of the circular economy, will discuss projects including the commission to replace all 27,000 seats at Schiphol Airport with new chairs designed according to circular principles.
Hutten will also talk about his country's plans to shift to a circular economy by 2050, and participate in a conversation with Andrew Morlet, CEO of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, which has called for 20 million designers to help shift the global economy away from the wasteful linear model.
Born in 1967 and based in Rotterdam, Hutten graduated from Design Academy Eindhoven in 1991. He started his own design studio the same year.
Within a couple of years he became known for his furniture designs as a member of the influential Droog conceptual design collective, which put a new generation of Dutch designers on the international map.
He has since designed numerous bestselling products, including the 2002 Domoor children's mug, which has sold over 500,000 units.
In 2008 he became art director of Gispen, the second-largest furniture brand in the Netherlands, and has guided its move towards becoming a circular brand. In 2017 he was named art director of Dutch carpet brand Carpet Sign.
