Breaking news: the start of the Venice Architecture Biennale has been pushed back from May to August due to disruption caused by the coronavirus in Italy.
Organisers of the architecture exhibition announced today it will run only from 29 August to 29 November.
Coronavirus has "jeopardised" the exhibition opening on its planned schedule, they said. Only two days ago Paolo Baratta, president of La Biennale di Venezia, held an online press conference giving details about the event without mentioning the issue.
Biennale will only last three months
Originally the biannual event was meant to run from the 23 May to 29 November, but it has been curtailed to just three months instead of the usual seven.
"The new dates of the Architecture Biennale have been established as a consequence of the recent precautionary measures on the subject of mobility taken by the governments of a growing number of countries in the world," La Biennale di Venezia said on its website.
"[This] will have a chain effect on the movement of people and works in the coming weeks."
Italy has major coronavirus outbreak
Outbreaks of a novel coronavirus, covid-19, have occurred around the world including a major cluster in Italy.
Restrictions are in place for all nonessential travel to the country, as well as China, Iran, South Korea and Japan. People returning from these areas are being asked to self isolate for 14 days until they test negative for coronavirus.
Organisers said that a small delay, rather than this three month one, was not possible due to the "complexity of the organisational machine" and likely absence of some of the major exhibitors.
Curator Hashim Sarkis had expressed concern about being able to complete the exhibition in time.
Sarkis chose this the theme of the Venice Architecture Biennale 2020 – How do we live together? – to invite 114 participants from 46 countries to imagine how people can co-exist harmoniously despite widening political divisions and wealth gaps.
