3Novices:Sancal provides refuge for weary travellers with La Isla sofa

Dezeen promotion: Spanish furniture brand Sancal has collaborated with Note Design Studio to create a new seating solution for tired travellers at airports.

Seeking a design to combat the inhospitable nature of "non-places", such as airport lobbies and waiting rooms, Sancal turned to the Swedish design studio, which came up with the La Isla range.

La Isla, which translates from Spanish to mean The Island, contains a solid wood seat surrounded by a blend of foam and fibre padding.

Note's design for the bench, which made its debut earlier this year at Milan design week, is split into three compartments to provide users with a private yet non-exclusionary refuge.

The soft seat comes in three different sizes and rests upon a wooden plinth that can be lacquered in a variety of colour options, from black and white to lemon and mango.

The upholstery is covered by a soft textile, with a choice of different coloured fabrics available from Sancal's collection.

The new chair range marks the second time the furniture brand has worked with Note, following on from its Tonella mini-armchair, which was based on wine barrels.

This latest addition to Sancal's catalogue adds to its long list of collaborations, including collections designed by Karim Rashid, Ricard Ferrer and Yonoh.

Stockholm-based Note Design Studio was founded in 2008, and has since worked across the fields of architecture; interior; product and graphic design for various clients including La Chance and Menu.
