Traditional Indonesian craft is combined with mid-century Danish furniture pieces inside this Bali hotel by Andra Matin, which features multi-hued bricks and handmade tiles.

9. Art Suite 7.5 ° Rø by Wolfgang-A. Lüchow, Sebastian Andreas Scheller and Anja Kilian, Jukkasjärvi, Sweden
This room was created for last year's Icehotel, which is built from scratch each winter using a combination of snow and ice found in its remote location north of the Arctic Circle.
Sections of the walls and ceiling are rotated bit by bit to create a square vortex that emanates from the bed.

8. Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge by Nicholas Plewman Architects and Michaelis Boyd, Okavango Delta, Botswana
This boutique safari lodge in southern Africa has a curved, shingle-clad form influenced by the armadillo and is located in a UNESCO World Heritage Site surrounded by wildlife.

7. Ace Hotel by Commune Design, Los Angeles, USA
Commune Design referenced Rudolf Schindler's West Hollywood residence when designing the decor for this outpost of the Ace Hotel in downtown LA, which is located inside a 1920s Gothic tower.

6. The Garden Room by Sigurd Larsen, Berlin, Germany
A bedroom and sauna are concealed by a wooden volume to create both indoor and outdoor space within this suite in the Michelberger hotel – recently overhauled by Danish architect Sigurd Larsen.

A muted colour palette and luxury materials create a Scandinavian feel inside this New York hotel by Space Copenhagen. The studio created a range of handmade furniture in Denmark for the rooms.

Colourful portraits of female icons hang from the walls of America's first gay boutique hotel, which BHDM has furnished with leather-studded chairs and a gold, glitter-clad bar.

3. Okko hotel by Patrick Norguet, Nantes, France
Each of the compact rooms inside this hotel in France by Patrick Norguet features an en-suite bathroom hidden behind a wavy louvred wall. This 18-square-metre room has a soft colour palette of grey, pink and white.

2. Casa Talia by Marco Giunta and Viviana Haddad, Modica, Sicily
This cave-like guesthouse in Italy has been converted into six suites, which are arranged around a central courtyard.
Local materials including decorated tiles and stone have been applied to restore the walls and floors of each room.

1. Bathing Bikou suite in Volkshotel by Hanna Maring, Amsterdam, Netherlands
Our winner this week brings Japanese design elements to one of nine unique suites inside an art hotel in the Netherlands.
To create an open yet intimate atmosphere, designer Hanna Maring added a wooden bathtub and a set of coloured screens designed to resemble the sky at different times of day.
