My name is Wang Shu, I and my wife together we have a small studio called Amateur architecture studio.
We start to design the Ningbo history museum from 2003, originally in this area they have about thirty beautiful village there and they demolished every village, beautiful village here.
Everywhere you go to see you will find some sort of drains, that the building will be demolished that everywhere is materials, its beautiful materials there. so I talk to our client I want to do the collection with all this materials, I want to build this museum to the people who are originally living here that they can keep some memory.
It's two things mixed together its concrete in the surface with a large amount of recycled Chinese materials. Its two things very directly combined together, the modern part the concert is does not just mean modern it uses the bambo mould to cast the concrete. So on old huge concrete wall you will find a very rich bambo texture on it and if you see the traditional recycled materials you will find its not the traditional way, its some new way, they have the relation to the tradition but its a new creation.
We work with the crafts men together to think how to do this so large different kinds of recycled material on the new museums. Tradition does not mean something that you put into the museum, if you put something in the museum it means something has died, it should be lived in the life. The craftsmanship is lived in the life thats why its more important than the shapes and the forms,so thats why I start to work with the craftsman.
